9 million researchers, and how they got here.

We’d rather show you the rules than ask you to trust a big number. Here’s who’s in, who isn’t, and where every piece of evidence comes from.

Count researchers by topic

  • cryo-EM 8,345
  • organoids 10,000+
  • single-cell sequencing 10,000+
  • CRISPR screening 7,367
  • spatial transcriptomics 10,000+
  • mass spectrometry 10,000+
  • CAR-T 10,000+

8,345 researchers work on cryo-EM.

Who’s in

Someone gets into GeekScope when they meet one of these:

  • 10 or more published papers. That covers 7,093,945 people, 78% of the index.

  • Corresponding author on a paper since 2021, meaning they led the work and fielded the questions about it. Most of the remaining researchers come in this way.

  • An investigator on a grant or a clinical trial.

Not in: people with fewer than 10 papers who haven’t led a paper since 2021. It’s mostly students, early-career researchers and occasional co-authors: real researchers, but rarely the person who signs off on a purchase order.

9,060,306 researchers in the index

The whole index, one dot per 1,000 researchers. Filled dots have 10 or more papers; open dots are the rest. People outside the rules aren’t drawn, because they aren’t in.

Where the evidence comes from

Every result links to its public source. We name sources by what they are rather than by vendor, and we never copy content from LinkedIn.
